The Art of Letting Go: Wear What You Really Love

Blog covers (3).jpg

I recently asked the Calvert & Co. Instagram community for their #1 style struggle and let me tell you now, it was powerful. I received all kinds of responses but they all had one big thing in common - I’ve heard them before! They’re the exact same struggles my clients have when they first reach out to me. It’s why I started this business in the first place!

My goal is to help people reclaim their style joy by giving them tools and processes to overcome their wardrobe woes. Believe me, it’s possible! In fact, I’m giving you one of those tools in today’s blog post!

If your top style struggle sounds a bit like these two Instagram community members, this blog post is for you!

Real Talk

Did you know that the majority of people only wear 20% of their wardrobe, 80% of the time? (Baumgartner)

How to let go of clothes - fashion psychology

So, the big question to ask yourself is “Why am I only wearing 20% on a regular basis?". From my experience working with clients, the most common problems are owning clothes that…

  • Don’t fit or flatter or figure

  • Are being saved "just in case”

  • Don't match your current lifestyle

  • You don’t feel comfortable or confident in

  • Don’t reflect your ideal personal style

What can I do about it?

Edit your wardrobe with intention! But first, it’s vital to understand the reasons why you wear (or don’t wear) certain clothes in your wardrobe. It will reveal something extremely important - what you truly value in an everyday piece of clothing AND it will make the process of letting go much easier. That’s why I don’t edit a client’s closet without first doing a Style Coaching! How can we edit effectively if we haven’t already established their lifestyle, body shape, personal style, and preferences?

Once you get clear on what you love to wear and why, it becomes infinitely easier to let go of clothes, shop strategically, and create outfits. In order to wear more of your wardrobe, you have to let go of the pieces that don’t serve your style goals.

Follow these 3 steps to learn “the art of letting go” and wear what you really love!

  1. Reflect: What were your life, body shape, and style like the last time you wore that piece of clothing?

  2. Remove: Thank and say goodbye to the pieces that no longer match your style goals or that you no longer feel confident wearing.

  3. Accept: Let go of your attachment to those items by reminding yourself that you don't need tons of clothes to have a functional and stylish wardrobe. You were only wearing 20% of your old wardrobe anyway!
