How To Spot High-Quality Clothes

High quality clothes on a rack in Nashville

Let’s face it: good quality isn’t about where you shop. It’s about what you choose.

I’ve helped clients build luxe, long-lasting wardrobes using pieces from brands at all price points—from Madewell and Aritzia to Rag & Bone and Saint Laurent—and yes, I’ll work with items you already own from Target or Zara if they align with your style and are in great shape. While I don’t shop fast fashion for clients, I do believe in making the most of what’s working.

(Spoiler: I own several well-loved pieces from Target and Zara myself—it’s not a sin!)

The truth is, it’s not about the store. It’s about knowing what quality looks (and feels) like—so you can make smart, intentional choices anywhere.

1. Construction ✂️

Good construction makes a piece last longer and look more expensive.

👀 What to look for:

  • Straight, even stitching (no loose threads)

  • Reinforced buttons and buttonholes

  • Lined garments when appropriate (especially in structured items like blazers, dress pants, or dresses)

  • Poor construction = floppy necklines + crooked seams and means constant repairs.

2. Fabric Quality 🧵

Yes—even cotton comes in high and low quality.

👀 What to look for:

  • Natural fibers (cotton, silk, wool, linen) should be tightly woven and smooth, not scratchy.

  • High-quality synthetics feel breathable and sturdy—not plasticky.

  • Heft and drape matter. A tee made of thick Pima cotton will lay better, stay opaque, and resist pilling.

✨ Bonus: A well-made synthetic can beat a cheap natural fabric.

I love the Polygiene®-treated basics at M.M.LaFleur—like the Nora Top—which stay fresh longer. Great under blazers or for busy days!

3. Washability 🧺

The real-world test: Can this survive your lifestyle?

👀 What to look for:

  • Machine washable vs dry clean only (what works for you)

  • Recovery: Will this fabric bounce back after washing—or stretch out and sag?

  • Will it pill or stay smooth? Tightly woven, smooth fabrics are less likely to pill.

Know your priorities. A mom of toddlers needs durability that is different from someone buying clothes for conferences and cocktails. And if you need both, let’s talk. 🤣 I promise, it IS possible.
